About the Department:

Department of physics started functioning shortly after Independence. More than ten teachers who are no longer with us have contributed immensely to this department. At present four full time teachers, one SACT teacher and one Laboratory assistant are carrying this department.
Most of the students of our institute belong to middle class background. We are trying our best to teach them. Of late question arises in our mind that why do we learn this subject? We know that the basic science seldom has an immediate impact but in the long run the do cause indirect changes. In the present context if we restrict ourselves to that segment of society made up of students of vocational courses then it is possible to identify reasons why teaching in physics should be encouraged. In the present situation central Govt. has established some institutes (IISER) in 2006 in which students can study from undergraduate level and make them suitable to do research in basic science. Development of technological and applied science of the country depends on basic science. Without it the growth of technology will not be possible. So we concentrate ourselves to teach and make students in this field to reach the finite goal.
The teaching in pure science had been started first at I.Sc. level in 1948. After ten years in 1957 the B.Sc. level courses was introduced in our collage. At that time Prof. Santi Banerjee, Prof. Sunil Neogi and Prof. Dhruba Ranjan Mandal acted as teachers in our department.
Subsequently Prof. Sourindra Kumar Mandal, Prof. Jogendranath Chakrabortty, Prof. Paresh Pal, Prof. Tapas Ghose, Mr. Pinaki Ranjan Roy joined as faculty members at different times and they are to be respectfully remembered for their heartiest dedication. In 1990 the B.Sc. Physics Honours course was introduced after having permission from the Directorate of Public Instruction.
At present Dr. S. P. Maity, Prof. K. Bhattacharya, Dr. S. K. Bera, Dr. M. Jana are working as full time faculty members, Mr. M. Chakraborty as SACT and Mr. S. Guria working as lab assistants.

LABORATORY FACILITIES:

Almost all the instruments required to perform experiments mentioned in the Under Graduate Curriculum are available. Well equipped Computer Laboratory and Dark rooms for Optical Experiments are separately prearranged. Facilities to perform some delicate experiments with Gaussmeter, Four Probes, Cathod Ray Oscilloscope, Function Generator and LASER are also accessible.

LIBRARY FACILITY:

In our departmental library, there are approximately 300 available books. Students can look over the books and can go through those reference books sitting inside the department.

The department constantly encourages students to engage themselves in activities beside their coursework for their all-round development through intellectual, creative, cultural and organizational advancement by providing them opportunities to participate directly to Wall Magazine named “SPECTRUM”, CULTURAL ACTIVITIES like Freshers’ Welcome, Teachers Day and Farewell function for outgoing students. They work hard for the success of these events where they carry out all the relevant tasks such as decoration, setting up the sound system and arranging food for all attending. The events are supervised by the teachers of the department.
Another aspects of the department is to impart training in doing experimental arrangement. Meetings between parents and teachers of the department, facilitate the teachers to address any questions or apprehension of the parents regarding the academic quest of their wards.
