About Us

  • India is a democratic republic with a federal structure of governance, the officials of federal, state and local levels are elected by way of a systematic, free and fair election process. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is the nodal authority, established under the Constitution of India, responsible for conducting elections in India. The voter strength in India accounts to almost a glaring 900 million voters. Every year the voter strength increases in India, by a significant number of youth crossing the age limit of 18 years and becoming eligible to vote. Moreover, the young and future voters, constitute a sizeable part of India’s democratic polity and its future.
  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has realized the importance of electoral participation and literacy to young prospective voters of our country. With this vision in mind, the ECI initiated a national programme in 2010 entitled: “Systematic Voter’s Education and Electoral Participation” (SVEEP). The programme mainly focused on voter awareness and information as well as motivation of voters for enhancing electoral participation. In view of the sustained efforts under SVEEP (Phase I and II), the voter turnout increased to 66.44% during General Elections 2014 from 58.19% during 2009 Lok Sabha Elections with substantial increase in voter turnout in Assembly Elections as well.
  • The ECI has decided to carry forward the efforts of both phases of SVEEP by moving into SVEEP-Phase III. One of the strategic pillars of SVEEP-III is “Continues Electoral Literacy and Democracy Education”. This phase is being build up with an aim of mainstreaming of electoral literacy among the young and future voters of the country through the curricular, Co-curricular and extra-curricular interventions at the college and University level including well designed coverage to the voter populations of 18 years age group not covered under the formal educational system.
  • In pursuance of this, ECI has decided to establish Electoral Literacy Clubs (ECIs) in educational institutions for strengthening the culture of electoral participation among youth and future voters of the county. The idea behind establishing such clubs is that they shall be the seat of learning through hands on experience and envisaged to serve as a vibrant hub of Electoral literacy through direct interaction in educational and other institutions in the country.
  • In conformity with this process of Election Commission of India, Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya, Tamluk, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, established on Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) on 16.07.2018 which is a purely academic as well as apolitical platform, to promote electoral literacy in all age groups of the students of the college through interesting activities but in an apolitical and neutral manner. The club is set up with the specific objective of targeting the new voters (in the age group of 18-21 years old) pursuing their graduation.
  • With the goal to build a participative democracy in India, the club encourages the students about their valuable vote in the time of election, spread awareness and also to encourage more students to come forward and register themselves for their voters ID and become a part of the voting process in the country.
  • Moreover, the Club is mainly focused on voter’s awareness, information sharing and motivating the students to cast their votes, to sensitize the students about their electoral rights and to aware and ensure the electoral participation of youth and future voters of the college.

Objectives of the Club:

  • To sensitize the student community about democratic rights which includes casting votes in elections.
