Department of Botany

The Dept. of Botany, Tamralipta Mahavidyalaya was started at the ISc level in 1949-1950 academic session. The department with its true generic identity was opened at the pass course level in 1969 under the University of Calcutta in terms of the memo no. C/10453/122/Aff. dt. 26.05.1969. Affiliation of the Hons. Course was obtained much later, in 1996, from Vidyasagar University vide meno no. VU/IC.AFF/70/96-97 dt.16.08.1996.

The dept. has been enriched by a host of scholarly faculty members viz., Prof. Subir Ganguly, Dr. Ashok Bag, Dr. Satyesh Ch. Roy, Dr. Pranati Ghosh, Dr. Swapan Bhattacharya, Prof. Samir Ganguly, Dr. Parimal Nag, Prof. Salil Kumar Sarkar, Prof. Sima Biswas and Dr. Arati Malakar, some of whom have subsequently left the dept. for joining as teachers either in Universities or in Govt. Colleges.

At present, the botany department has eight faculty members and one laboratory attendant. The teachers are Dr. Tridib Kumar Sahoo (Associate Professor), Dr. Debashis Bandyopadhyay (Assistant Professor), Dr. Buddhadev Guria (Assistant Professor), Dr. Prabal Das(Assistant Professor), Mr. Bikram Pal (SACT), Mr. Sandip Kumar Maity (SACT), Mrs. Arpita Bera (SACT) and Mr. Arghya Pal (SACT). Still after retirement, Mr. Ashok Kumar Seth is serving as the laboratory attendant in our department. Apart from regular teaching learning processes, the most prominent academic activities of this department are arranging educational tours in varying climatic regions and organizing seminars and webinars in regular intervals.
